So these are the two structures we’re planning on putting new siding on. These two structures sit about 150 feet away from each other, but we still wanted them to be similar in design. We went back and forth with choosing the right design that we wanted to live with for the rest of our lives since I don’t plan on undertaking this again! We decided on staying true to our ranch and have decided to go with a board and batten style siding for both the barn and the house. After choosing our style – the next decision was what material we were going with. We needed something that an inexperienced carpenter like myself could install and that my future self wouldn’t have to maintain. I’ve told my wife many times to use these hands for all they’re worth while I’m still young enough to use them!

After much research we were at least able to narrow it down to using vinyl as our best choice of material. We were encasing over 3200 square feet of area with this siding, so we needed something durable, inexpensive and maintenance free. After traveling to every single building supply store on Long Island, we finally went with Royal Building Products Haven Insulated Board and Batten Siding. We wanted as wide of a board as we could get it and this was one of the only ones available in our price range. I’m looking at you Certainteed, your wide 10″ board was beautiful, but at nearly 50% more cost, it wasn’t something we could swing in our budget. The insulation will do something to help with noise, but the best part about is that it keeps the vinyl from bending so it creates a truly flat surface to show off the lines in the siding. Thanks Royal Building Products for making a beautiful and affordable product!
